Helena is in love with Demetrius, Demetrius is in love with Hermia, and Hermia is in love with Lysander. However, it’s mutual. There’s also Hermia’s father, who is mixing up all the cards, trying to marry his daughter off to the unloved Demetrius. And Duke Theseus seems to be even indulging him in this. At night, the young people flee away from Athenian law and their parents’ advice to the Duke’s Forest, where they will be completely entangled (and disentangled!) by the spells of the elf king Oberon and his absent‑minded assistant Robin.
Here, everything is a game — theatrical, amorous, sometimes a bit naive, sometimes complex and convoluted. Sometimes it’s intense, even dangerous — it’s best to observe such a game from the sidelines, without interfering. Sometimes it’s childishly simple — you get drawn into it, whether willingly or unwittingly. But in this performance, it’s incredibly vital, incredibly thrilling. In the chaos of the game, in the nightmarish haze, the line between sleep and reality blurs. Groping, the boundaries of the world are found — and pushed apart: a vast, incomprehensible realm. Where the «moss bed» beckons with its freshness, like cool sheets. Where lovers confuse each other, entwine into a living tangle, breathing with jealousy, youth, fear, and—love. It permeates the very air here, like music, like a magical juice; it is the only thing that moves «both the sea and Homer»…
