Director Philip Gurevich invites the audience to take a closer look at the figure of the prominent Soviet writer, public figure, and «stormy petrel of the revolution,» Maxim Gorky, without the textbook‑style monumentality — the focus of the play «Gorky. Love» is shifted to his inner human evolution.
Four women who played significant roles at different stages of his life tell the story of Gorky: his first love, Olga Kaminskaya; Ekaterina Peshkova, his only legal wife; Maria Andreeva, the leading actress of the Moscow Art Theatre; and the fatal, enigmatic Baroness Maria Budberg.
These are the stories of the women who accompanied Maxim Gorky throughout his life. — says director Philip Gurevich. «Our goal isn’t even to take the famous Soviet writer off his pedestal; we want to look at him as a person made of flesh and blood. His women tell the story of the great man, and a woman always knows everything about her man. This is a play about Gorky without Gorky. However, each of his lovers is a person worth paying attention to in their own right.»
