Oleg Efremov, Galina Volchek, Oleg Tabakov, Igor Kvasha, Evgeny Evstigneev, Lilia Tolmacheva and Viktor Sergachev stood at the origins of Sovremennik. All of them, pupils of the Moscow Art Theater Studio School, who absorbed the tradition of Russian psychological theater and the precepts of Stanislavsky, accomplished the impossible for their time — they created a theater that was radically different from others. Sovremennik was born not by order of the authorities (which already makes it an unusual cultural phenomenon), but by the will of a group of young artists — desperate dreamers in love with their idea and each other’s talent.
Today, Sovremennik remains a place where new forms of artistic expression are born, new names of artists and directors are being discovered, and projects are being created that exist inextricably linked to the context of time. A theater with an amazing history and rich creative heritage, which dreams of living in unison with time, endlessly transforming, searching and being on the same wavelength with its contemporaries.
