This choreographic interpretation of Anton Chekhov’s great play could be called «Secrets Behind the Scenes.» The phrase, which, at first glance, can serve as a succinct annotation of the production, in fact reflects only the superficial semantic layer of the premiere.
«The seagull. Ballet Story» immerses the audience in a unique world electrified by passions on the other side of the wings — inviting and striking in contrasts. In it, love affairs are intertwined with the torments of creativity, personal dramas are intertwined with the mysteries of the birth of artists’ works. «Discovering the Unknown» in the canonical Chekhov text, Boris Eifman explores how works of art emerge from an infinitely diverse life stream that unites the sublime and the base, the eternal and the momentary.
The performance was released in the year of the 45th anniversary of the Eifman troupe and became for him both a convincing result of a long artistic evolution, effectively synthesizing the accumulated creative experience, and evidence of the beginning of a new stage in the choreographer’s creative destiny.
