The life and work of Viktor Borisov-Musatov is a constant movement, self-improvement and overcoming difficult circumstances. Borisov-Musatov is associated with the era of the Silver Age and symbolism, but his art also attracted the attention of future representatives of the artistic avant-garde.
The project will introduce the viewer to the unique working method of the artist, who integrated photography into his creations. The ratio of the photo study and the photo sketch with the paintings of the artist will become one of the important themes of the exhibition. A special section of the exhibition will be devoted to sketches of monumental murals, reflecting the artist’s search for a synthesis of art, going beyond art into the space of real life.
The exhibition will feature more than 140 works by Viktor Borisov-Musatov from twenty museums and private collections, including famous masterpieces such as «Self-Portrait with my Sister» (1898, Russian Museum of Fine Arts), «Tapestry» (GTG, 1901), «Emerald Necklace» (GTG, 1903−1904), «Portrait of a Lady» (GTG, 1902), «Autumn» (1905).
